Kinja'd!!!

Alright boys and girls. I recently (saturday) destroyed the diff in the LS powered Datassun. Don't worry LSD rear diff coming soon in the form of a STI rear diff with a clutch type LSD.

However, until I get that swapped out I'm left driving the womans car a reliable kia spectra 5 thats more like a mild hatch .. not much "hot" about it.

I was thinking about just buying a junk car I could let go of quickly after my month or so of work coming up on the datassun.

RULES :

Must be below $1500

Must be in the state of TEXAS the closer to Austin the better.

(for the asking price I only have about 1000 bucks but I'm one hell of a negotiator)

I'd really like to have A/c and a reliable car

( Keep in mind I have a race car I need something reliable but cool.. )

Must be COOOOOL .. I'll drive the spectra 5 before I buy something boring.

123 go !

Why STi Diff? is that going to handle the torque?

I hope it is. I'm doing my best to keep the IRS in the car and not have to put a solid axle in it. We'll see. If I break this STI diff I'll be putting a ford 8.8 in it with a mini spool to avoid any further issues.

Really can't stand the styling of these cars. Looks like a good option tho. Thanks for trying lol

you could keep the Irs with an 8.8 Thunderbird Supercoupe center section. It would take some reengineering but I'm sure no more or less than an STi center diff.

Theres a few guys swapping big ford IRS's into these Z cars but like you said they all take a decent amount of fab work to get right. I spoke to Josey Steeples who was the first todo the Cobra IRS swap and he is thinking about making a swap kit the problem is it requires a lot of welding and I'm not a 100% I want to pay for all that work to be done. As I'm not the best welder nor do I have a welder

And a ranger, if the AC works could be good for hauling around parts for your 280

I get that, but I doubt the STi differential is going to be a bolt in. I would see If you can find a tbird at a local scrap yard and get the center section and halfshafts. Some appear to even have bolt up flanges instead of splined outputs on the side. Then it's a diff mount, half shafts resized and maybe a drive shaft shortened. AND since you know it's an 8.8 it will hold up to damn near anything. Another option would be the diff out of a C3 Vette as those are pretty meaty as well. LSX torque deserves a V8 capable diff.

I agree but with the STI rear diff being a bolt in swap. The reason is that it's a long nose diff unlike the short nose 240sx and Q45. Plus when the STI diff your buying is a back up for a professional rally driver brianne corn I think it could hold the power. I'm making 350 to the ground give or take and the tires are only 195/60/15 . The reason it broke in the first place was spinning one wheel wayyyyyyy tooo fast wich destroyed my spider gears. or so I think.

Where'd you find the STI diff? Brianne?

Nice, STI swap! Lemme know how it goes. Turn up any new research on it? I'm really curious for my Z, which I know will be slightly different than yours since my 240 uses an R180 from the factory. But still... lemme know what you turn up.

go by a R180 out of a STI and bolt it up ! lol I wish it was that easy. I'm going to have to figure something out for the CV axles either keeping the CV axles and modifying my hub assembly or I'm going to cut the 4 bolt half shaft flange off my R200 and weld it to the R180 diff.. Still too early to tell but we'll see what happens.

YESSIR ! She also has the STI CV axles the kicker is the stock STI CV Axles are almost 5 inches longer than 280z half shafts. One of those stats you never think of .. I'd never expect a STI to be 10 inches wider than my car but it sure as hell is .

Brianne is the best. What is your solution for the half shafts?

Kinja'd!!! DatASSun > IDROVEAPICKUPTRUCK

Either cut the output flanges on the R180 off and weld on my 4 bolt flanges for my stock half shafts .. Thats the cheap route. Or pay 500 dollars for converter flanges that replace the stock output flange on the diff with 4 bolt plates so I can use stock axles or pay 900 for a full swap kit that included porsche CV axles with new hubs that have a spline on the inside instead of the very weak and cheap 4 bolt flange with a u joint job that came stock.

Yeah, when I'd mentioned it the other day I forgot that your later Z would be running an R200 stock. I think that means you'll need a different mustache bar. And then the axles are a bitch... I think the subaru CV axles are too long, if I remember right, in addition to them being the wrong spline for the Z hubs. Welding the flanges sounds like a serious bitch. Anyway, keep me updated.
